How to overcome your Indie hacking (Solopreneur) Writer's block

This year, I set out to do what thousands of dreamers on X claim to have done. Build a sustainable business that lasts. If I read one more story about a nine-year-old building an app in two hours and cashing out millions, I swear I’m going quitting the internet, for good.

With the advent (or slop) of AI, developers — as early adopters — have been sold the dream of becoming entrepreneurs, escaping the 9-to-5 grind, and finally sailing off to Ko Phi Phi to enjoy some beach-infused sunset piña coladas.

After ten months of playing the game of building, building, building, marketing, marketing, marketing and now going through my first indie hacking writer’s block… (yeei 🥳)

I’ve been reflecting more and more on how we measure our time by money and how deeply ingrained that is in our society. Lily works two jobs and cashes out big bucks; I can’t help but wonder if she’s really happy.

I’ve been trying hard to quantify my progress. My bank account is definitely not thrilled about my decision to reduce my working hours, yet… I do feel free, and I’ve learned a lot.

  • You’ve launched an app and got one user?

  • Your DigitalOcean droplet (switch to Hetzner, by the way) invoice haunts you at the beginning of every month?

  • You can’t remember the last time you got an email notification for a purchase?

Welcome to the club .

After weeks of staring at my screen wondering what I’m even doing, Here are my insights on how to overcome your indie hacker/solopreneur writer’s block:

The 3 Core Motivations

Motivation runs on three engines:

Purpose — “Why am I doing this?” The reason behind what you do.

Progress — The feeling of knowing you’re moving forward.

Play — Having fun along the way (I am big on this one).

You need at least one engine running at all times. When all three stall, it’s a recipe for disaster — you’ll feel stuck and demotivated.

Don’t Measure Time in Money

Especially in the early days. This one’s hard — particularly if you’re running on a tight runway. Don’t put profit in the driver’s seat. This is a marathon; it takes stamina and endurance to get there.

Remember that what you are doing, is a highly creative endeavour

Think about your favourite pop stars. Do they really drop banger after banger, or do they need some years in between their master creations?

It is a hard path, don't beat yourself down. Creativity thrives in silence, rest and void too.

Reframe the Goal

Shift the goal. If you’re aiming for that shiny $10K MRR and it doesn’t seem feasible right now, focus instead on becoming the kind of person who ships — whether that’s a new project or a new marketing iteration. Reconnect with why you’re doing this in the first place.

Maybe freedom isn’t about quitting your job or hitting $10K MRR. Maybe it’s just about building something that feels meaningful — even if no one’s buying it yet.
